As an Invisalign® dentist, we speak with a lot of adults that are wondering if Invisalign® is a better alternative for teeth straightening than traditional braces. We can assure you that Invisalign® will be your best option. Invisalign® is a more attractive and more versatile alternative to braces that still creates a perfectly aligned smile. Throughout this article, we will cover common questions and processes that explain what we can do for you and your smile.
The Invisalign® Process:
As an Invisalign® dentist, we will provide you with an aligner that is built of durable, clear plastic to create a virtually invisible appearance. This aligner is created based on a mold of your teeth and a diagram of the correction process. The aligners will be completely unique to you and your teeth. You will wear them throughout the day and night for the duration of your treatment. Every two weeks you will have a new aligner to wear which will continue the straightening process until completion. You should try to wear your aligner for at least 20 - 22 hours a day for the best results.
The Treatment Length:
Treatment times vary. Your personal treatment time will depend on the length of time we determine is best for you based on the misalignment level of your teeth. As an Invisalign® dentist, we can give you a more exact idea during your initial consultation but the average time is 12 months.
Removal for Meals:
Whenever you eat a meal or snack you should remove your aligner. If you keep your aligner in during meals, you may bend, crack, or dent the aligner which will ruin the mold and interrupt the straightening process. Eating with your aligner in may also trap harmful bacteria near your teeth. Remove your aligner during meals and if possible, clean your teeth following a meal.
Cleaning and Caring for Aligners:
As an Invisalign® dentist, we advise cleaning your aligner whenever you brush your teeth. Use a clean toothbrush and water to gently scrub off the inside and outside of your aligner. Do not use toothpaste as this may cause abrasions on your aligner and decrease the clarity of it. Invisalign® also sells Invisalign® Crystals for cleaning that you can purchase separately. After cleaning, immediately put aligner back on your teeth.
The Best Candidates for Alignment Using Invisalign®:
The best candidates for Invisalign® are adults. Adults have all of their adult teeth including wisdom teeth if they have not been removed. This means that adult teeth have finished moving for the most part so they are at a moldable stage that will ensure the best results. Adults prefer a straightening method that does not detract from their appearance and is not an obvious distraction— Invisalign® is the perfect solution for these preferences.
